Shopping has been one of Leeds’ major attractions since Victorian times. The opening in 1996 of the first Harvey Nichols store outside London was regarded as marking a turning point in the status of Leeds as a retail destination. The city is also proud of its hotels, pubs, clubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas that have created a lively night-time economy although problems associated with excessive alcohol consumption sometimes mar the city’s image.
