ALONG THE WATERFRONT

The River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal have been central to the economy of the city of Leeds. But after the advent of the railways and then the ascendancy of road freight, the waterways fell into disuse and the properties and wharves beside them were progressively abandoned. Leeds only started to ‘rediscover’ itswaterfront in the mid-1980s and it was not until 2002 that The Waterfront Strategy was adopted by the City Council. The themes of this chapter are city living and urban regeneration.
